ASOC Senator Application

Who are your Senators?

ASOC Senators are selected to be the best representation of the Ohlone Student body that year.

Each semester, 10 Senators are selected in that semesters 'freshmen class' of senators.  Each Senator has 1 year terms (Start of Fall to End of Spring, or Start of Spring to end of Fall).

But how does the Senate get selected?

fyvgubhkjn.jpg

Each semester ASOC accepts 10 new senators. Of those 10 senators, they are broken into sets of 5 categories, abiding by the following classifications.

  • 2 STEM Majors

  • 2 Social Science Majors

  • 2 Business Majors

  • 2 Arts Majors

  • 2 At Large Majors (Allowing overlap of filled majors, non-categorical majors or undeclared majors).

These classifications are, however, loose, and the definition of which category each major falls under is to the jurisdiction of the Executive Council. The core goal of this is to ensure that no single major holds over 20-40% of a single class of senators. The more points of view brought to the table, the better.

(Senators may change their major partway through their term and retain their original seat if needed)

A note one may make by observing this system is it doesn't take into consideration the percentage of the student body each major has, giving all equal representation regardless of size. This is remedied by the Executive Council being elected by popular vote by all students, and the InterClub Council giving each club a vote, whereby majors/social groups with more clubs will have more votes.

As a result, this freshmen class of 10 senators will be placed into the senate with the 10 senators from the Sr. Class of Senators in their second semester in the Senate. The goal of this is continuing the organization's generational knowledge, and to maintain functionality no matter which semester it is.

The ASOC Senate is the core of the student democratic process at Ohlone

ASOC PRESIDENT

The ASOC President's position is the central role in the organization, overseeing all ongoing operations in both the Student Administration and Legislature. The President also Chairs both the Senate and Executive Council, requiring their knowledge of Parliamentary procedure and Brown Act to be fine tuned. Every year new challenges arise for ASOC, and the President must face them head on.

Policy, Resolution, and Legislation Creation

ASOC is built around the idea of creative and complex solutions to pressing and equally complex problems. Whether its building culture through a bill creating a concert on campus, a proclamation announcing and condemning any malfeasance related to the college, or a new policy proposal make ASOC or the college more efficient, P&R is the place to be.

While all of the Legislature may procure and introduce ASO Bills, anyone, through Executive approval, may have a bill written by ASOC's P&R Branch. This means any staffer with a creative idea, with approval, may work with the team to create a bill and have it introduced to the ASOC Legislature by the ASOC President if approved by said President.

It is also the duty of this branch to review these bills to make sure they comply with State Law, Ed-code, Brown Act, AP & BP policies, and ASOC Bylaws Policies so to ensure ASOC stays in the clear.

What are ASOC Advisors?

ASOC brings in new students every year, and with that comes the much-needed responsibility of ASOC's advisors. Advisors mentor incoming ASOC members and recommend certain actions for the Executive Council. All advisors are voted in and may be voted out, excluding College mandated admin advisors, whom ASOC respectfully protests their forced involvement.

ASOC has 3 categories of advisors.

Faculty Advisors

Administration/Staff Advisors

Honorary Alumni Advisors

Faculty Advisors

Faculty advisors are the strongest advocates for ASOC, as tenured faculty hold the least likely chance for a conflict of interest swaying their influence over ASOC. By maintaining faculty advisors, ASOC can firmly oppose abuses by the Ohlone College administration. Our tenured faculty advisors pass down invaluable knowledge to each generation of ASOC leaders.

ASOC is allowed up to 3 main faculty advisors, and up to 2 per each committee or program. If any member of the faculty would like to join as an advisor or would like more information, please email: ASOCOhlone@gmail.com

Sheldon Helms

Administration Advisors

Administrative advisors are college mandated and are forced upon ASOC. These most commonly include up to one member of the office of student life (who may not be the director), and the Vice President of Student Services.

These advisors have historically been severely overcome with conflicts of interest, as they work directly for the president of the college, and have no checks or balances in place. In past instances, Admin Advisors have gone as far as legally threatening ASOC if they go against the College President's interests.

ASOC has vocally stated its dissent and stance against this position.

ASOC Alumni Advisor Template

Alumni Advisors

Each year ASOC may nominate and vote on a number of its graduating alumni to become Advisors. When Alumni advisors return to the campus, they will hold a permanent ex-officio seat at the table to provide their professional input to current issues.

Alumni Advisors will be listed in the ASOC bylaws with their accomplishments and contact info for future generations to reach out to as needed.
